SANTUARIO DELLA MADONNA DI CUSTONACI
The sanctuary, which has always been a pilgrimage destination has late sixteenth century origins by underwent continued transformations until the beginning of the twentieth century. A monumental stairway precedes it as does the churchyard with characteristic cobbled stone paving, which has a great decorative effect. The interior of the church is in a Latin cross layout and is in Neo-Gothic style; In the apse there is a large marble tribune decorated with marble and wooden statues, the most splendid plastic-architectural sacred furnishings in the Trapani area. In the centre is the painting on a wooden panel depicting the Madonna lactans (XV century). There are many legends linked to the cult of the Madonna, and the transportation of the painting up Mount San Giuliano, from 1568 to 1936, which was also to invoke rain in times of drought, is famous.
